How LED Light Bulbs Work
Light bulbs are one of the many things that we use everyday – but not many of us think about what they are or how they work. There are dozens of different types of light bulbs and each of them are used differently and for different things.
When you know the different types and how they are used you can determine which ones are best for you to use in your own home. Did you know that certain types can waste the electricity you use in your home? But there are others that will burn brighter and longer and save you money at the same time.
Light emitting diodes are solid, small light bulbs that have been proven to be very energy efficient. LED’s were always limited to single bulb use – but recently manufacturers have been broadening the scope and expanding their use by “clustering” many of the small bulbs together.
When they were first created these clustered light bulbs were used only for appliances that were powered by batteries like flashlights. But now LED bulbs have been built in such a way that they around 180 bulbs for each cluster – which are covered in diffuser lenses that help to make the beam of light wider.
They come available with standard bases that fit into the common household light fixtures. Manufacturers are working to make LED lights available and for them to become the next best thing in home lighting.
The only thing holding manufacturers back from being able to produce them and send them everywhere is the price that it takes to make them. That is why researchers at Purdue University have created a special process in which to use inexpensive silicon wafers that work to replace the sapphire based technology that makes the price so high. With this they will be able to join the ranks of popularity of CFL’s and incandescent light bulbs.
